The death of a loved one is always difficult under any circumstances, whether it is expected, or sudden and tragic. It is an event that we can never really prepare for. Such a loss can be disorienting and can trigger many confusing thoughts and feelings. One of the important decisions when a death occurs is how best to organize a response to the reality of the death.
We recognize the importance of a memorial service. It helps family and friends to come to terms with the loss. It helps to honor and respect our loved one, and it creates a memory of the event that can be a powerful part of healing as we continue on with our own lives.
BCC understands the mysterious dynamic between life and death, and that God’s power is creative and transforming. God is able to create new life out of all of our experiences of death, in ways that we can’t even imagine. Our response to death is one of trust—simply entrusting the life of our loved one (and ourselves as well) into the hands of God.
The Brea Congregational UCC church is open to having a funeral or memorial service for any one who needs such a service in a sanctuary setting. One of the ministers of the church will help your family through the process of planning a service that is appropriate for your loved one and helpful to the people attending, and then will officiate at the service. Or a family can use their own minister.
Psalm 23 reminds us: Even though we walk through the valley of the shadow of death, we will not be afraid, because God is with us.
